Shopify Google Ads pay off when the store, the product feed and the tracking are right before the first click. I have run paid search since 2013, and I check the feed and the tracking before I touch a single bid. This guide shows the setup I use on a new Shopify store, then walks through what happened on a brand new jewelry store.
Quick Answer: How do you set up Google Ads for a Shopify store?
Install the free Google & YouTube app, link a Merchant Center account and a Google Ads account, and let your products sync. Fill in the feed attributes Google needs for your category. Confirm each purchase is tracked once, with its order value. Then launch Performance Max on the feed and judge results over weeks, not days.
Key Observations
- The Google & YouTube app is free to install; you pay Google for the clicks.
- Jewelry falls under Apparel & Accessories, so color and age group matter in the feed.
- Track each purchase once, with its order value, before any bidding decision.
- A new MiKi Jewellery store returned 7.81 in conversion value per cost in its first 47 days.
- In that account, ad rank held back far more reach than budget did.
Here is the setup order I follow on a new Shopify store.
| Step | What it does | What I check |
|---|---|---|
| Install the Google & YouTube app | Connects Shopify to Merchant Center and Google Ads | Admin access on both Google accounts |
| Sync products | Sends store products to Merchant Center | Disapprovals and missing attributes |
| Set up conversion tracking | Records purchases and their value | No duplicate tags, purchase set as primary |
| Launch the first campaign | Puts the feed in front of shoppers | Budget split, negatives and URL exclusions |
| Review after learning | Shows which products and collections sell | Lost impression share to rank and to budget |

How does Shopify connect to Google Ads?
Shopify connects to Google Ads through the Google & YouTube app. The Shopify App Store listing shows it as free to install, with a note that additional charges may apply. The app syncs your products to Merchant Center, supports conversion tracking and lets you run Performance Max from inside Shopify.
Setup happens in the Shopify admin. Shopify’s setup guide says to open Sales channels, then Google & YouTube, and connect a Google account. You then pick or create a Merchant Center account and select a Google Ads account you already have.
What do you need before you install the app?
You need a live store that Google can review. Google’s onboarding guide asks for a valid payment method, no store password, a refund policy, terms of service and contact details. Your Google login also needs admin rights on Merchant Center and on the Google Ads account.
Shopify’s guide lists two limits that catch out agencies and owners with more than one store. A multi-client Merchant Center account cannot connect directly to Shopify. Each Merchant Center account can also link to only one Shopify store at a time, so check both before you start.
How long does the product sync take?
The first sync can take up to 24 hours, and later changes usually sync within a few hours, according to Shopify. Only products available to your online store sync on their own. If a product is missing in Merchant Center, check its sales channel setting first.
Why does the product feed matter more than the ad copy?
In Shopping and Performance Max, the feed is the ad. Google’s onboarding guide states that Shopping and Performance Max campaigns need an active product feed to work. The product title, image, price and attributes all come from that feed.
Identifiers matter as much as titles. Merchant Center’s sync guide warns that if the GTIN, or the MPN and brand, are wrong, Google does not publish the products and the account could be suspended. No bid strategy can fix that.
Which feed attributes matter most for a jewelry store?
Color and age group matter most, because of where jewelry sits in Google’s system. The Google product taxonomy places jewelry under Apparel & Accessories. Google lists color and age group as required for free listings in that category, and for Shopping ads in the United States and several other countries.
Color takes up to three values separated by slashes, such as silver/blue. Google warns that if you separate colors with commas, only one color is applied. For age group, adult jewelry simply uses the value adult.
On MiKi Jewellery, a new Shopify store in Western Australia, the feed work covered color, material, age group, size and GTIN. Material holds the metal itself, such as sterling silver. Size is optional for rings, and products without a maker’s GTIN use brand plus MPN instead.
Where should product title keywords come from?
Title keywords should come from real search demand. I pull them from Keyword Planner, Semrush volume and the search terms report, not from guesses by an AI writer. When a title uses the words shoppers actually type, the product has a better chance of matching their search. I cover the full process in my guide to Google Shopping feed optimization.
How should a Shopify store track Google Ads conversions?
Track each purchase once, with its order value attached. Google calls the Google & YouTube app the easiest way to set up conversion tracking on Shopify. Its suggested defaults are purchase, add to cart and checkout started conversion actions in the linked Google Ads account.
I check tracking before I change any bid or campaign structure. If a sale is counted twice, or counted without its value, every automated bid after that learns from bad data. On MiKi Jewellery, Shopify purchases are tracked with their order values, so the account reports conversion value and not just a count of sales.
Which conversion action should be primary?
For a store bidding on revenue, the purchase should be the primary action. Google uses primary conversion actions for bidding, while secondary actions are for observation only. Add to cart and checkout started are useful to watch, but as secondary actions they will not pull bids toward carts that never pay. Check this after setup, since the app suggests all three.
Why does order value matter for bidding?
Value-based bidding can only aim at the numbers it receives. Maximize conversion value and target ROAS both read the value each conversion passes back. If every sale reports the same value, Google cannot tell a small order from a large one.
How do you avoid counting a sale twice?
Pick one tagging method for each action and remove the rest. Google’s help page tells you to check for duplicate tags if you use the app alongside a storefront or custom pixel, and to remove legacy tags. The same page notes that you can turn on enhanced conversions during setup or later.
For the wider picture, including Google Tag Manager setups, read my guide to Google Ads conversion tracking. It explains why I check tracking before any bidding change.
Which campaign should a new Shopify store run first?
Start where your data is. On MiKi Jewellery, a store with a feed and no conversion history, the launch was Performance Max split into one campaign per collection or product type. When I add Search, I start it on exact match for roughly the first 15 days.
Exact match costs more per click, but the traffic matches what you sell. Broad match only works once an account already has conversion data. Until then, I let Performance Max do the broad job and keep Search on the terms I know.
Google’s serving rules support this split. Google’s Performance Max overview says Search campaigns with an exact match keyword are prioritized over Performance Max. Search themes inside Performance Max carry the same priority as phrase and broad match keywords.
The guardrails I set before any launch, such as account-level negatives and URL exclusions, are in my Performance Max campaign guide. That post also shows how to read the results once data comes in.
What happened when I launched Google Ads for a new Shopify jewelry store?
In its first 47 days, the new account returned 7.81 in conversion value per cost on A$2.88k of spend. That came from five Performance Max campaigns on a Shopify feed, with purchases tracked at order value. The account had no spend before 5 September 2026, per the MiKi Jewellery case study.
MiKi Jewellery is an independent brand in Busselton, Western Australia, with a team of fewer than ten. It sells named collections and product types, such as earrings, through Shopify. The budget was small and in Australian dollars, and there was no conversion history for automated bidding to learn from, as the case study notes.
What did the setup include?
The setup had three parts: the feed, the tracking and the campaigns. Shopify data flows into Merchant Center with the jewelry attributes filled in. Purchases are tracked with their order value. Each of the five Performance Max campaigns carries one collection or product type, with its own budget.
Splitting by collection was a budget decision. A best-selling collection cannot use up the money meant for a newer one. Return on spend also shows by collection instead of as one blended number.
What did the first weeks show?
These are the account figures for 5 September to 21 October 2026, across all five enabled campaigns.
| Metric | Result |
|---|---|
| Ad spend | A$2.88k |
| Conversion value | A$22.5k |
| Conversion value per cost | 7.81 |
| Conversions | 200 |
| Clicks | 2,936 |
| Cost per conversion | A$14.39 |
| Conversion rate | 5.40% |
| Average daily spend | About A$61 |

Each campaign returned between 6.30 and 9.11 in conversion value per cost, according to the case study. That spread is why separate budgets help. Spend can move toward the stronger collections without starving the newer ones.
These are one store’s results over a short window. They show what a clean setup made possible for that business. They are not a forecast for any other store.
What would I fix next?
Ad rank, not budget, held back most of the missed reach. The case study reports search lost impression share of about 68% to ad rank and about 14% to budget. Google defines the rank figure as time your ads did not show because of poor Ad Rank. So the next work is product data and assets, not more budget.
The earrings campaign raised a second issue: all of its asset groups were limited by policy. Because earrings run in their own campaign, the limit stays inside that one campaign. The fix is to edit the flagged assets or appeal.
The case study also lists custom labels by margin tier as a next step. That lets spend follow profit, not just revenue. I walk through the campaign-by-campaign read in my Performance Max setup guide.

How much should a new Shopify store spend on Google Ads?
Spend enough for each campaign to gather data, and judge results against your break-even ROAS. There is no single right number. For scale, MiKi’s five campaigns share about A$85 a day at the time of writing, and each campaign holds its own budget, per the case study.
Break-even ROAS is 1 divided by your profit margin. For example, at a 40 percent margin, break-even ROAS is 1 divided by 0.40, which is 2.5. Below that line, sales lose money once ad costs are paid. Above it, the campaign earns more gross profit than it spends.
I never quote a client a ROAS figure I will achieve, especially on a new or relaunched campaign still in learning. What I can commit to is the setup, the guardrails and an honest read of the numbers each month.
Give the account time before you judge it. Google says the learning period never lasts more than 7 days, but performance can take 1 to 2 conversion cycles to settle. If your customers take a week to decide, that means weeks, not days.
Why do Shopify Google Ads campaigns struggle in the first month?
The problems I look for first are setup issues, not ad copy. Duplicate tags inflate conversions and teach bidding the wrong lesson. A missing color or age group can keep products out of free listings and US Shopping ads. A policy limit can cut one campaign’s reach, as it did on MiKi’s earrings.
Changing too much, too often, also hurts. Google advises against multiple target changes within a single conversion cycle unless there is a clear business need. Creating a new bid strategy, or adding and removing campaigns from it, starts a fresh learning period.
Final URL expansion is another trap. It is on by default in Performance Max, so Google can send shoppers to any page on your domain that you have not excluded. On a Shopify store, that can include blog posts and policy pages that do not sell, so I exclude them before launch.
Before I call a Shopify account ready for spend, I check these five things.
- The app is linked to the right Merchant Center and Google Ads accounts.
- Products show as approved, with color, age group and identifiers filled where required.
- Each purchase is tracked once, with order value, and legacy tags are gone.
- Account-level negatives are in place in phrase and exact match.
- Blog and other non-selling URLs are excluded from Performance Max.
FAQs
Is the Google & YouTube app free for Shopify stores?
Yes, the app itself is free to install. The Shopify App Store listing notes that additional charges may apply, and the main one is your ad spend, which you pay to Google. The app syncs products to Merchant Center, supports conversion tracking and lets you run Performance Max from inside Shopify.
How long does it take for Shopify products to show in Merchant Center?
Shopify says the first sync can take up to 24 hours. After that, product changes usually sync within a few hours. If a product never appears, check that it is available to your online store sales channel and that its identifiers and required attributes are filled in.
Should a new Shopify store use Performance Max or Search?
Use both, with different jobs. On a store with no history, I let a feed-based Performance Max campaign find buyers across Google, and keep Search on exact match for roughly the first 15 days. Broad match only works once the account has conversion data, so I hold it back until then.
Why does Merchant Center ask for color and age group on jewelry?
Jewelry sits under Apparel & Accessories in Google’s product taxonomy. Google requires color and age group for free listings on all products in that category, and for Shopping ads in the United States and several other countries. Use adult for adult jewelry, and up to three colors separated by slashes.
Can I use the Shopify app and my own Google tags together?
You can, but check for duplicates first. Google’s help page warns you to check for duplicate tags when you use the app alongside a storefront or custom pixel, and to remove legacy tags. Pick one method for each conversion action so every purchase is counted once, with its value.
How long before Google Ads works for a new Shopify store?
Google says the learning period never lasts more than 7 days, but performance can take 1 to 2 conversion cycles to settle. MiKi Jewellery’s published results cover its first 47 days. Plan to judge a new account over several weeks, and avoid stacking changes inside one conversion cycle.
